During a magical era now known as the pre-Code, filmmakers battled the Great Depression and censorship in the quest to grab an audience by its lapels and bring them into movie houses. Pre-Code films explored worlds unknown to most Americans, organized crime, sexual abandon, homosexuality, miscegenation, and infidelity, all for a the mere price of a movie ticket.
